The mission of the Knoepfler Lab is to enhance our understanding of neural stem cells, embryonic stem cells, induced Pluripotent Stem (iPS) cells, and tumor stem cells. Our goal is to make stem cells safe and effective for regenerative medicine therapies for diseases such as Diabetes, Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's Disease, Blindness, Deafness, Arthritis, Heart Disease, Liver Disease, Huntington's Disease. and many others Another objective is to find causes of various types of cancer leading to new diagnostic and treatment options based on novel models. Our studies may also provide key information to prevent these diseases from occurring in the first place. One of the key tools we use is functional genomics.

Please visit Dr. Knoepfler's departmental site and his other site, focused on chromatin and epigenetics of stem and tumor cells. Dr. Knoepfler is also an Assistant Investigator of the Institute for Pediatric Regenerative Medicine at Shriners Hospital of Northern California.

See videos below of beating heart muscle created from hESC and iPS cells, left and right respectively. Below that is the CIRM video of Dr. Knoepfler discussing stem cell tumorigenicity and regenerative medicine.
